Common Read Assignment and Finding Balance

Dear Transfer Students Entering the Class of 2029,

Two things on your radar this week: your intellectual welcome to Wes, and a framework for protecting your time once you get here.

Common Read: Bird Girl by Mya-Rose Craig

Every incoming student, including transfers, participates in our Common Read program. This year’s selection is Bird Girl: Discovering the Power of our Natural World by Mya-Rose Craig. The goal of this program is to introduce all new Wesleyan students to intellectual life on campus by selecting a book, film/documentary, or performance that is thought-provoking and scholarly. Reflections are due by 8/15.

The Rule of Seven

Before course pre-registration opens on July 30, it’s worth thinking about time management, prioritization and balance. Wes offers 150+ student organizations and a packed academic schedule so the instinct to do everything is real. Our recommendation is to limit yourself to seven commitments in your first semester. Not because Wes isn’t exciting, but because depth beats breadth when you’re getting your footing at a new university.

Online Orientation Reminder

July 15 and July 30 task deadlines are coming up fast. Log into the Online Orientation program to confirm you’re on track. Follow @wes.involvement on Instagram for updates from the Orientation Intern team.
