Dear Class of 2029,
You will soon participate in course pre-registration (starting July 30), so now is a great time to consider how you will balance academics and other aspects of college life in your first year.
The Rule of Seven: During your first year, be selective about your commitments to give yourself time to adjust to college-level academics and discover what truly interests you. You have eight semesters to explore Wesleyan’s full range of opportunities, so there’s no need to dive into everything immediately. We recommend limiting yourself to seven activities during your first year.
Many students find the transition from high school challenging, particularly those accustomed to juggling multiple activities. College presents a different kind of intensity – both academically and socially – where depth often matters more than breadth. Focusing on fewer commitments allows you to engage more meaningfully and perform at your best. Our Academic Peer Advisors provide strategies for finding the right balance as you navigate this transition.
Scam Awareness: Be cautious of fake job offers targeting college students. Legitimate Wesleyan jobs are posted through the Gordon Career Center’s Handshake platform. Report suspicious messages to security@wesleyan.edu .
Email Management: All university offices will use your Wesleyan email exclusively for communications; we will no longer communicate to your personal email account. Create folders to organize important messages by category for organization and quick retrieval when you need to review messages in the future (e.g.: Liberal Arts Advising, Class Dean, Course info, etc.). Need help? Our peer advisors are ready to help you get organized before you step on campus.
Message from Orientation Interns: Make sure you’re up to date with Online Orientation tasks . While the June deadlines have already passed, there are many tasks due on July 15 and July 30. Make sure you are devoting time to these very important tasks throughout the next couple of weeks.
